Calligraphic tekke panel with gilded lettering

1324 / 1906

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

It was customary for the name of the founder of a sufi order to be written on a panel that was hung on the wall of the tekke (dervish lodge). This example based on a template by Sami Efendi, who was a well-known 19th century master of the magnified celi sülüs and celi talik scripts, reads, ‘O Lord Mevlana’.1Above the extended letter ta in the centre of the inscription is a small composition reading, Kuddise surruhu’l-aziz (May his exalted secret be holy). At the bottom is the calligrapher’s colophon reading, Nemakahu’l-muznibu Sami ğaferallahu zunûbehu (Written by the sinner Sami. May God forgive his sins) and the date AH 1324. The gilded lettering and illumination on a deep blue ground must be the work of the illuminator Bahaddin Tokatlıoğlu (d. 1939). Around the broad border outside the gold ruled border is a scrolling pattern with rumi motifs. The original carved wooden frame has a finial in the form of a Mevlevi headdress resting on a cushion surrounded by olive branches.
