The beads have been cut from Dentalium shells, and so have vertical flutes, are hollow, and either cylindrical or slightly tapered, depending on which part of the shell they were cut from. There are a total of 399 beads and one spherical openwork bead. The shell beads were found in a salvage excavation at Temenye in the district of Pendik, Istanbul, in 1992 by a team from Istanbul Archaeological Museums. The beads date from the Late Neolithic - Early Chalcolithic period. They are a grave gift found in grave no. 22 of a total of 30 found in the excavation area. The grave belonged to a child, and the string of beads was found wound around the skull.
