Menşur (royal patent of appointment)

1 Rebiyülâhir 1300 / 7 Şubat 1883

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

A menşur was a royal patent of appointment to high government posts. The example exhibited here concerns the appointment of Abdullah Paşa, governor of Rumelia, to the rank of vizier and membership of the Council of State. The lines of the text are written in black and gold ink alternately. At this period celi divani script was writtten in a new style, with the letters intricately arranged one above the other and the ends of the lines curving upwards. The calligraphy of this document is attributed to Nâsıh (d. 1885) while the tuğra is thought to be the work of Sami Efendi (d. 1912). The tuğra is surmounted by a pear-shaped field of illumination by the illuminator Rikkat Kunt (d. 1986).
