Evocations, Passages, Atmosphere: Paintings..

The exhibition in the Lisbon Gulbenkian Museum featured examples of Turkish painting dating between 1850 and 1950, little known in the Western world, including 38 paintings from the Sakıp Sabancı Museum’s collection. Realized with the communication sponsorship of the Sabancı Holding, the exhibition also comprised works of foreign artists working for the Ottoman palace, along with those of Turkish artists who had encountered Western painting for the first time in the 19th century.

Starting the celebrations for its 50th anniversary with an exhibition in Turkey, the Gulbenkian Foundation concluded the year with this exhibition in Lisbon. This return visit of the SSM, marked also the first exhibition of the selected works of the great masters of Turkish painting in a prominent European museum.

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Gulbenkian Foundation was inaugurated with an exhibition held at the SSM, in Istanbul, the city that its founder Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian was born. The exhibition titled “The Art of the Book from East to West and Memories of the Ottoman World Masterpieces of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon,” held between 15 April -28 May 2006, featured manuscripts, various Ottoman textiles and ceramics.
