Sultan II. Mahmud (1785-1839)

Calligraphic panel with gilded lettering

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The inscription is verse 88 of the Hud surah, ve mâ tevfîkî illâ billâh (My achievement derives only from God). The perfect proportions of the letters and overall balance of the composition reflects the influence of Mustafa Rakım’s style on Sultan Mahmud II. His signature at the left, which reads, Ketebehu Mahmûd Hân b. Abdulhamîd (Written by Mahmud Han son of Abdülhamid), was designed by Mustafa Rakım.
