Hafız Osman Efendi ( -1698)

Selected surahs (Kehf, Vakıa, İhlas, Falak, Nas, Fatiha)

h. 1086 [1675]

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The first surah in this manuscript is the Kehf surah, which is headed by an illuminated panel consisting of tiny polychrome flowers and large cloud motifs knotted in the centre on a gold and lapis blue ground. It is encircled by marginal darts in the form of blue hatayi blossoms. The headings and verse stops of the other surahs are illuminated, and the spaces between the lines of the colophon are decorated with gold cloud cartouches. The illumination is the work of a master. On f. 1v is a circular seal impression dated 1257/1841-42 belonging to Ali Şefik. The seal was engraved by Azmi. The covers of the chestnut coloured leather binding with flap are decorated with a gold-tooled medallion with pendants, and the doublures are lined with paper. The binding was replaced during repairs carried out in the 20th century.
