Sideboard

19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısı

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

This sideboard is part of a walnut dining room set in the Renaissance Revival style, consisting of a dining table, fourteen chairs, two sideboards, and a vitrine. It has the same iconographic features as the sideboard with the inventory number 400-0097 and the vitrine with the inventory number 400-0118

The sideboard features carved decorations on its pediment, edges, and cabinet doors. The oval shape in the centre of the pediment is surrounded by foliated scrolls and floral motifs. The top shelf is supported by carved putti figures on both sides. The term putti, denotes a mythological figure in a work of art depicted as a chubby male child, usually naked and sometimes winged. The border of the thin shelf on which the putti stand is adorned with carved leaves, lined up side by side.

Underneath its open counter, the sideboard has two drawers, and two compartments with doors. The outer borders of the doors are decorated with leaves arranged side by side, with a rectangular geometric frame in the middle. On either side of the sideboard is a moveable handle, adorned with vegetal decorations and scrolling acanthus leaves beneath. All the legs of the sideboard are in the shape of lion’s paws, in keeping with the other pieces of the dining room set.
