Ai Weiwei's act of dropping and shattering a 2,000-year-old Han dynasty urn opens the way to understanding this iconoclast. The action -originally executed and photographed in 1995- demonstrated the attitude of an artist in the face of a changing China, a country which fully embraced capitalism but had yet to come to terms with its own complicated history. Inevitably, the work evokes memories of the cultural destruction encouraged during the Cultural Revolution.
