When the Bosphorus Dries Up

2021

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The work, in which the Bosphorus landscapes of traveling photographers and painters who visited Istanbul in the 19th century are depicted again using contemporary technology, bears witness to the power of this natural structure to encompass values that are considered to be opposites, and the change it has experienced throughout history.

The work, eponymous with a chapter from Orhan Pamuk's novel The Black Book, which depicts the image of the Bosphorus as the waters recede, also points to the layered meanings of sea landscapes in the context of art history and the sublime as attributed to nature. The connotations of the image in question for creation and destruction are re-evaluated in the context of the layered history and ecological transformation of the Bosphorus.
