Koran

h. 1053 [1643]

This Koran begins with the Fatiha surah and the first four verses of the Bakara surah in an illuminated double spread. The spaces between the lines are decorated with gold cloud cartouches, and the horizontal and vertical panels and broad border with pointed lappets are decorated with branches, hatayi (composite stylised flowers) and leaves on gold and lapis blue grounds. Between these are orange leaves and buds. Blue darts consisting of large hatayi blossoms protrude from the tips of the pointed lappets. The surah headings are written in red on the sized paper ground and illuminated in a plain style. There are no marginal rosettes, each ten-line and 5-page section being marked instead by the words aşr and hizb written in gold in the margins. The heading of the hatim prayer at the end of the manuscript (ff. 335r-338r) is not illuminated. The edges are gilded in the halkâr style. The covers of the black leather binding with flap are decorated with a gold-tooled medallion and cornerpieces. The chestnut coloured leather doublures are decorated with a medallion filled with gold flecking. The binding is a later replacement dating from the 20th century, when the marbled endpapers were added.
