En'am-ı Şerif

The En’am surah begins with an illuminated frontispiece (f. 2r) with long blue marginal darts. The title of the surah and number of verses are written in a sülüs hand inside a cartouche with a gold ground. The area outside the cartouche is decorated with naive stems and flowers in gold on a lapis blue ground, while the tiny cornerpieces are filled with gold rumi motifs on a gold ground. The text is set inside gold-ruled borders with black outlining. Each page of text is written as one line of muhakkak followed by three lines of nesih with vowel signs. There is no illumination in the framed rectangular spaces. The arrangement of calligraphic hands is reminiscent of the style of the calligrapher Abdullah Amasî (d. after 1500).1 The first leaf of the manuscript (ff. 1r-2v), which consists of prayers to be recited before and after reading the En’am surah, and Turkish annotations in the margins were added at a later date. The lobed oval seal of Ahmed b. Mehmed has been stamped on folios 2v and 31v. The chestnut coloured leather binding with a stamped medallion with pendants on the cover appears to date from the 20th century.
