Şekerzade Mehmed was a calligrapher regarded as the stylistic heir of Hafız Osman (d. 1698) in the first half of the 18th century. The kıt’a exhibited here begins with the phrase, ‘from the Prophet of God’ written in sülüs, followed by a hadith in four lines of nesih, ‘The Prophet of God declared: Whoever amongst you opens the door of prayer, so will God open the door of mercy to him. God wants most of all to be asked to grant health.’ The colophon on the last line reads, ‘Written by the humble Seyyid Mehmed, known as Şekerzade.’ The koltuks of the kıt’a are decorated with bouquets of diverse flowers painted in the naturalistic style favoured at this time by an artist expert at depicting flowers. The bouquet consists of a rose, pink tulip, two-tone pansy, pink wallflower still half in bud and small blue chrysanthemums. The margins are decorated with vassale collage using marbled paper, a traditional type of decoration for kıt’a.
