This Koran begins with the Fatiha surah and first four verses of the Bakara surah in an illuminated double spread (ff.1b-2v). The broad border is decorated with gold scrolling branches, rumi motifs and oval cartouches filled with green rumi motifs on a dark blue ground, and the two long edges are adorned with gold lappets. The narrow vertical and broad horizontal panels that fill spaces around the writing are decorated with cartouches filled with green hatayi flowers on a gold ground. These cartouches are the principal element of the design. The surah headings are written in white ink in rıka script on a gold ground embellished with black branches and rumi motifs. The headings of the first surahs are more colourfully decorated. The marginal rosettes marking each twenty-page section (cüz), verses where worshippers should prostrate themselves in prayer (secde ) and each five-page section ( hizb ) are illuminated. These rosettes are oval or circular in shape, lobed, and have blue darts. The hatim prayer at the end of the text was probably added in the 20th century, when the Koran was rebound.
