Imperial edict in the name of the Armenian Patriarch Tanyel

14 Zilhicce 1213 [9 Mayıs 1799]

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The ferman is addressed to the high judge of Rumelia and issued in response to a petition presented to the Divan (Council of State) by the Armenian Patriarch in Istanbul Tanyel (d. 1800). In his petition Patriarch Tanyel had explained how the estates of deceased members of the Armenian community are distributed in accordance with the existing regulations, and how the estate of his predecessor Patriarch Zakarya (d. 1799) had been distributed after his death. The ferman upholds the current regulations and commands that no one except the patriarch shall have the right to interfere in how the property of Patriarch Zakarya was distributed. The illuminated area above the gold tuğra is filled with lobed cartouches containing flowers on a ground of gilded halkâr scrollwork. On each side is a pink rose on a leafy stem.
