Passing Art, History, and Cultural Heritage to Future Generations

As part of Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum's Education and Learning Programmes, our goal is to support children in Istanbul and across Turkey in comprehensively learning about art, history, and cultural heritage. We aim to help them understand, take ownership of, preserve, and make these values sustainable. A solid foundation in art and history from a young age not only develops creative thinking skills but also helps children grow into individuals who approach the world with a hopeful, happy, and aesthetic perspective. Especially in today's world, where the allure of technology has increased, and children have become more dependent on screens, guiding them toward museum visits and creative activities is becoming increasingly important. In this regard, we would like to remind parents of the many opportunities that museums can offer young students.

At Sakıp Sabancı Museum, the museum tours and thematic workshops we organize with children aim to make them aware of the existence of inspiring worlds beyond their everyday lives. Our art and history workshops not only introduce children to different disciplines but also raise awareness about the importance of learning history correctly and preserving cultural heritage. These activities enable them to establish conscious connections with the past and make sense of their cultural identity.

Our approach is to stimulate children's curiosity, helping them internalize the learning experience, enrich their intellectual knowledge, and develop critical thinking skills. In our workshops, which have a thematic infrastructure focused on history and art history, we aim to strengthen children's research, observation, and dialogue skills, as well as help them acquire new knowledge and skills by establishing a physical relationship with spaces and objects.

We know that learning in museums may not directly lead to an improvement in children's academic performance. However, it should be remembered that this experience positively affects their cognitive abilities, self-confidence, motivation, problem-solving, and communication skills. This type of education not only supports individual development but also contributes to raising the conscious and sensitive individuals of the future. As the Sakıp Sabancı Museum Education and Learning Programmes team, we continue our efforts to connect children with art, history, and cultural heritage, supporting them in gaining knowledge and awareness in these areas.
