Composite Column Capital

19. yüzyıl

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The kalathos surface of this 19th century marble composite column capital is decorated with two rows of acanthus motifs. Below this section is the annulet. The leaves have five sections and three points, and the longest ones are in the middle section. The curved ends of these motifs touch the leaves on the sides. Between the flat abacus and the echinus, there is a cross motif and the volutes feature three-pointed leaves that bend towards the abacus. In one section of the capital there are certain differences between the abacus flower and acanthus motifs, and the annulet form doesn’t continue in this area. Based on these elements, it is considered that the capital is in fact from the 4th -5th centuries, having been reworked at a later date.
