Ion-Impost Capital

MS. 5. yüzyıl

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

This marble capital from the 5th century is an example of the impost form, which was common in early Byzantine architecture and allowed the load to be transferred from the rectangular section to the cylindrical columns due to its circular lower surfaces. There are two symmetrical bowl-shaped leaves with an arrow motif between them on the pulvinus section between the anterior and posterior volutes of the capital, which bears no decoration on the impost surface.
