Corinthian Column Capital

MS 5. yüzyıl ortası

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The top slab of this marble colum capital, dated to the middle of the 5th century, has two levels. The kalathos surface that supports this section features two rows of acanthus motifs, with four on the top and five on the bottom. The leaves are broad and their tips are pointed. The acanthus motifs on the upper row are placed in such a way that they coincide with the corners of the capital plate. Where the tips of the leaves on the lower row touch, an acanthus mask appears. Helixes with simple spiral forms carry the capital plate, and envelop the vegetal decoration below like a lyre.
