Cybele Votive Altar

MS 2. yüzyıl

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The goddess Cybele is depicted on this votive altar, dated to the 2nd century. Cybele was an extension of the mother goddess cult that goes back to prehistoric times and is specific to the Phrygian region of Anatolia. In different periods, she was identified with Artemis, Demeter, and Aphrodite. As was the norm, the goddess is depicted on the altar with two lion figures on either side, on her right knee and within an arched structure. There is an omphalos stone on the pediment of the arch.
