Double Half Column

MS 5. - 6. yüzyıl

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

This marble piece dated to the 5th-6th centuries is an example of double half-columns, a common feature of Byzantine architecture. These columns were used in various ways, with the taller examples seen in church sections such as the naos, the middle or side naves, the narthex, or the gallery. The shorter types were typically used in windows. This piece, in the SSM Collection of Archeological Artifacts, consists of two half-columns and has two half-faces. Each face features a plinthos. Three-pointed leaf motifs are engraved on the surfaces of the column capitals, which are detailed with two rows of profiles.
