Composite Column Capital

MS 6. Yüzyıl

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The kalathos surface of this 5th-century composite column capital is decorated with two rows of acanthus motifs. There are spaces between the motifs with closed leaves, and their long tips are twisted outwards. The acanthuses in the upper row are placed in a staggered fashion between those in the lower row and support the volutes with their leaves. The echinus surface is decorated with stylized leaf motifs, positioned side by side between the volutes, and the abacus above is decorated with laurel leaves. The laurel leaf motif is also seen on the annulet/bracelet below the kalathos surface.
