The Koran opens with the Fatiha surah and the first four verses of the Bakara surah on an illuminated double spread. Horizontal and vertical panels surround the writing. Gold is the predominant colour in the illumination of these panels and the wide border with pointed lappets. The decoration consists of cartouches with a lapis blue ground, and pink, white and blue composite flowers of the hatayi type on scrolling branches. The margins are filled with cherry and lapis blue hatayi blossoms and branches painted onto the plain sized paper ground. The surah headings and marginal rosettes marking the 5-page sections and the verses where worshippers should prostrate themselves in prayer are illuminated. Each 10-line section is marked by the word aşr written in gold. The covers of the dark chestnut coloured leather binding with flap are decorated with a gold-tooled medallion with pendants. The doublures and endpapers are of green and cream gold-flecked paper. During repairs carried out in the 20th century, the original covers were replaced, the pages trimmed to fit, and the edges gilded with halkâr decoration.
