Imperial edict

20 Rebiyülevvel 1060 [23 Mart 1650]

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

This ferman or imperial edict was issued in response to a complaint by the dervishes of Aziz Mahmud Hüdai Tekke in Üsküdar. It is addressed to the kadı (judge) of Üsküdar and commands that no one but the şeyh has any claim to the revenues of the dervish lodge, and that if anyone contravenes this command the authorities are to be notified. To the right of the tuğra, inside a rectangular panel with an illuminated heading, is written, ‘Let the necessary action be taken, and any other avoided.’ This sentence in the sultan’s handwriting was known as the Hatt-ı Hümayun. The area above the tuğra is surrounded by a medallion filled with gold rumi scrolls and an oval composition of blue flowering branches.
