John-Paul Stonard: 'Baselitz and the Wider Creation'
John-Paul Stonard: 'Baselitz and the Wider Creation'
Georg Baselitz is an artist who has always been intensely aware of the art of the past, and has constantly played off the ideas and techniques of older masters. This talk introduces the wider theme of Hintergrundgeschichte, or 'history as background' in Baselitz's work, reaching back to his earliest Hero series of drawings, prints and paintings, and tracing it forward to the present day. We see how the wider creation has played out in recent years in two exhibitions, in Dresden (2013) and Vienna (2023), where the dialogue between old and new took centre stage. It is a dialogue that takes place on the level of painting itself, creating the sort of connections that can only be forged in the eyes and mind of an artist
The talk will be conducted in English, with simultaneous translation into Turkish.
