Heinz Peter Schwerfel: 'Filming Contemporary Art: An Invitation for a Trip into Unknown Territories'
Film is not photography, means filming art is never just reproducing it. A good documentary does not just repeat reality, it translates and enlarges it. Heinz Peter Schwerfel, an internationally acclaimed German director, writer, and curator, recognised since the 1980s for his projects that introduce contemporary art and artists through film, will discuss cinema as a nuanced, complex medium that broadens the horizons of art. Schwerfel, known for monographic documentaries on prominent figures in contemporary art, has also interwoven art, literature, and philosophy in collaborations with eminent thinkers. From 2002 to 2010, he served as artistic director of KunstFilmBiennale Köln, one of Europe’s leading art film biennials, and continues to explore the convergence of art and cinema in projects within Turkey. We are delighted to present his film on Georg Baselitz to Istanbul’s art lovers.
The talk will be in English, with simultaneous translation into Turkish. Entry to the conference is included with museum admission. Click here to register.

Born in Cologne in 1954 and now based in Paris, Heinz Peter Schwerfel is a documentary filmmaker, art critic, and independent curator whose writings have appeared in prestigious German publications like ART and DIE ZEIT, as well as in numerous exhibition catalogues. Following the Turkish translation of his book Cinema and Art in 2013, Schwerfel reconnected with his audience this year through After Cinema: Storytelling in Contemporary Media Art. As the founder and artistic director of the international artist film festival Kino der Kunst in Munich, Schwerfel has gained global acclaim, with retrospectives in New York, Helsinki, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires, and his works now form part of the Centre Pompidou’s collection in Paris. In the mid-1980s, he established ARTCORE FILM, a company dedicated to producing cultural documentaries focusing on the intersections of art, theatre, literature, and philosophy. Schwerfel’s body of work includes collaborations with artists and authors such as Georg Baselitz, Christian Boltanski, Daniel Buren, Katharina Grosse, Rebecca Horn, Joan Jonas, Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, Janis Kounellis, Annette Messager, Bruce Nauman, Cees Nooteboom, Philippe Parreno, Tino Sehgal, and Peter Sloterdijk. Schwerfel has also created series on design and performance for the European cultural channel ARTE and earned praise for his presentation of the Greek Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Art Biennale with artist Loukia Alavanou. His curatorial projects extend across museums and galleries, showcasing artists like Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Shirin Neshat, and Ekrem Yalçındağ.
