The first line of his kıt’a is the besmele (bismillahirrahmanirrahim, ‘In  the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate) in sülüs script, followed by three lines of nesih consisting of two hadith: ‘The Prophet declared: The best of all assembly rooms is the largest’ and ‘The Prophet declared: Teach your children writing, archery and swimming, because these are important skills.’ The colophon begins at the end of the third line: ‘Written by the humble Mehmed of Crete, may his sins be forgiven and his imperfections veiled, the year 1146.’ This calligraphic composition by Giritli Mehmed was not originally illuminated. The 20th century artist İsmail Hakkı Altunbezer (d. 1946) illuminated the koltuk panels and area above the extended letter sin of the besmele in a traditional style. The margins of the kıt’a are decorated in the traditional manner with vassale collage using marbled paper.
