Koran

The surah headings in this Koran are written in sülüs and the colophon, as in his other works, in rıka. The opening spread with the Fatiha and Bakara surahs is illuminated, but there is no illumination around the surah headings. Like other works by Abdullah el-Herevî the opening spread illumination of this Koran may have been executed in Herat in the early 16th century. Alternatively the illumination of the opening spread may have been carried out at the Ottoman palace studio in the early 16th century. Particularly in the second half of the 15th century Timurid, Akkoyunlu and Türkmen artists specialising in book production migrated to the Ottoman cities of Amasya, Bursa, Edirne and Istanbul, where their styles exerted an influence on local Ottoman artists. Nor should it be forgotten that the Ottoman royal studio also carried out renovation of worn books and illuminated those that had been left incomplete. The manuscript’s original binding has not survived. The present binding of chestnut coloured leather is decorated with a stamped medallion composition that must have been executed in Istanbul in the 20th century.
