Kitap Sanatları ve Hat Koleksiyonu

Album of scaled calligraphic exercises

20. yüzyıl başı

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The album consists of mürekkebat meşks (exercises in line arrangement) in the form of selected texts written on marbled paper in tones of light green and pink, with margins of vassale collage in orange, green and yellow paper. Between the ruled gold borders around the panels of writing is a broad border of coloured marbling. As was customary for calligraphic exercise albums there is no illumination. The size of each letter is measured in red dots, and in the spaces between the lines are stylised forms of the word sa’y, meaning ‘work’.  The exercises have deliberately been written in watery ink so that pupils can trace the movement of the reed nib and ink over the paper, which was traditional practice for calligraphers teaching talik. The album can be dated to the early 20th century. Although the binding dates from the first half of the 20th century an older die has been used for the tooled decoration. The doublures are lined with marbled paper by Mustafa Düzgünman (d. 1990) with a design of bouquets of red poppies.
