Title deed in the name of Sokollu Mehmed Paşa

21-29 Safer 983 / 1-9 Haziran 1575

Sabancı Üniversitesi Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi (Emirgan, İstanbul, Türkiye)

The document (sınırname) was drawn up in Istanbul. It concerns five pieces of land (Ali Fakih and Muradca in Bergos, and Menteşe, Demiryarı and İbrahim in Avşar) granted to Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Paşa (d. 1579). The document explains that these pieces of land were used by the grand vizier as pasturage for dairy production, and that their boundaries were measured. Sultan Murad III accepts these boundaries, commands that no one should violate them, and renews the property deed. The monogram of the tuğra reads, ‘Şah Murad b. Selim Şah Han may he ever be victorious,’ and is outlined in gold ink. The ground of the kürsü (monogram) and the spaces between the letters are gilded. The text of the document is written in black ink in celi divani script. Gold dots known as zer-nişan are arranged at intervals above the writing.
