The Fatiha surah and first four verses of the Bakara surah are written on an illuminated double spread (ff.  1r-2v). The composition is surrounded by a broad border consisting of large palmettes and floral motifs  on a gold ground, the spaces between these filled with gilded rumi motifs and stems on a dark lapis blue  ground. Around the border are lapis blue marginal darts with composite flowers, and between these  triple spot motifs. The spaces between the lines are filled with gold cloud cartouches. Distinctive features  of this illumination are the lilac coloured cloud motifs inside horizontal panels above and below the  writing, and red trefoil flowers inside the narrow vertical panels. The surah headings and large marginal  rosettes are illuminated. The chestnut coloured leather binding with flap has a tooled composition of  medallion and cornerpieces on each cover and a medallion on the doublures. The covers are 20th century  replacements.
